Re-enchantment by the River

A Sacred Water Pilgrimage in the Serra da Estrela Mountains With Joy Valenti & Sangita Lakhanpal

Pilgrimage

DATE: 27th August to the 3rd September 2025

LOCATION: Serra da Estrela Mountains, Portugal

PRICE: $1850

Hidden in the mystical Serra da Estrela mountains lies a magical river sanctuary—an untouched haven where ancient waters whisper the songs of the earth.

This is a rare opportunity to step out of ordinary time, reconnect with nature, and immerse in the timeless practices of Vedic and Tantric yoga amidst the healing embrace of immaculate, living waters.

A Magical Sanctuary of Wonder and Wild Beauty

Cradled between the Alva River and the sacred Caniça stream, this land is a well-kept secret—an enchanted place where crystalline waters dance over quartz-rich beds, infused with a pure, revitalizing energy. The river weaves its way like a temple through the landscape, creating waterfalls, natural jacuzzis, hidden caves, and serene pools that beckon us to pause, reflect, and remember.

This untouched wilderness invites wonder. It is a place to pray, to dream, and to awaken your senses to the living presence of nature. Here, you don’t just practice yoga—you experience it as a dialogue with the land, the elements, and the sacred.

A Sacred Place, Untouched by Time

The land where we will gather has never been farmed or developed. It remains a pristine remnant of a more ancient world. Traces of Roman stonework, left by those who revered the sanctity of water, remind us that this place has long been known as sacred.

Wander the trails, and you’ll feel the land speaking. The silence here is profound, broken only by birdsong and the murmur of the river—an invitation to listen deeply and reawaken your innate connection to the Earth’s wisdom.

In the surrounding Mondego valley, century-old chestnut forests shelter rare flora and fauna, offering a sense of wonder and reverence for the intelligence of wild nature.

Our Home: A Riverside Retreat

We will stay in a charming Portuguese village along the Alva River, close to the sanctuary. This tranquil retreat offers the ideal balance—remote yet welcoming, wild yet accessible. From here, we will take gentle walks to discover secret waterfalls, the ancient rock formations of Cornos do Diabo, and the underground streams of the Ribeira da Caniça.

Yoga, Ritual, and the Return to the Sacred

This is a retreat for those seeking not just rejuvenation, but re-enchantment. Together, we will return yoga to its original essence—as an animistic, shamanic path of communion with the elements. Joy and Sangita will guide us through Vedic and Tantric practices that help us remember our place in the great web of life.

  • Practice yoga and meditation on sacred ground, immersed in the elemental forces

  • Participate in Vedic water and fire rituals that awaken the sacred in daily life

  • Learn mantras that re-tune your being to the rhythm of nature

  • Sing and chant by the river, opening the voice and heart to wonder

  • Immerse yourself in crystalline waters, receiving their purifying, healing power

  • Trek through unspoiled landscapes that stir a deep sense of magic and belonging

This retreat is a pilgrimage—into the heart of nature, the heart of yoga, and the heart of yourself.

A Temple for the Waters

Sangita, the guardian of this sacred land, is currently building a water temple and yogic shala—spaces devoted to honoring the river as a living being, and to preserving the ancient spiritual traditions that awaken reverence for life.

This is a pioneering moment—the first immersion here with Joy and Sangita guiding us. Together, they bring decades of experience, deep devotion, and a shared vision of restoring our spiritual relationship with the Earth.

A Pilgrimage for the Soul

This is not just a retreat. It is a magical journey of re-enchantment—a return to the wonder of being alive on this Earth. The river calls. Come bathe in its sacred waters.
